Driver stuck behind huge pack of bicycles does what you've always wanted to do

05/29/08
Get out da' way!

Annoyed that the 60+ bicycles in front of him were moving at a snail's pace, a driver in a Ford Falcon(?) cut in front of the pack and slammed on his brakes. Bicycles were a-flyin' everywhere.

Computer model shows that God was invented by Evolution? Ruh-Roh!

05/29/08
Now I'm totally confused...

Because of our instilled belief in authority when we are young (like trusting your mom when she says not to touch the fire), humans are predisposed to believe certain things without requiring proof. Put this into a computer model and voila - religion flourishes.

Excerpt:

The model assumes, in other words, that a small number of people have a genetic predisposition to communicate unverifiable information to others. They passed on that trait to their children, but they also interacted with people who didn't spread unreal information.

Oil skyrocketed because of a legal loophole?

05/28/08
We want our mammoth SUVs back!

If any of you have been following the news about the high cost of oil, you have probably heard that everyone is pointing at speculation on oils futures as one of the leading culprits. Basically there are investors that are betting that oil is going to cost more in the future and by doing so, the price of oil goes up. While this is annoying, I generally assumed that is just the way the stock market works.

But then on Monday, Sierra's Dad told me that several years ago, when gas was like 70% cheaper, there were limits on how much US investors could play the oil futures game. After doing a few google searches, I discovered that in 2000, the Commodity Futures Modernization Act allowed US investors to electronically speculate in unregulated markets (sometimes called the "Enron loophole" or the "London loophole"). By complete coincidence, gas prices went from $1.50/gallon to $4.00/gallon in 8 years.

I really am bothered that I had to dig for to find articles about this. I am on CNN.com everyday and I never saw this article. All the other google links are little blogs like mine. I wonder if the people running the main stream media are the big investors in oil speculation.

This might be a time to write you congressman and ask him to cut the speculators nuts off and reel them back in.

Acronyms and Code words your doctor uses but will never explain

05/28/08
Your doctor hates you...

Here's a few that jumped out at me:

ECU - Eternal Care Unit: heaven ("gone to the ECU = dead)
FLK - Funny Looking Kid (sometimes suggests rural inbreeding)
Lignocephalic - wooden-headed (i.e. dense [thick] or stubborn)
Solomf yoyo - So long, mother-f*****, you're on your own
WNL - Will Not Listen; patient won't take medical advice

The problem with trailers today

05/26/08
You know, trailers today are almost universally superior to trailers from like 30 years ago. Because a good trailer can make or break a movie's opening weekend, they are VERY well produced. The problem with a growing number of them, though, is that they give too much away. Did you ever walk out of a movie having heard like 70% of the jokes BEFORE you stepped foot into the theater? Let's do an experiment. Below are the trailer and teaser for Hancock. Take a look. (there are movies to watch so click on the link)

Indiana Jones and the Return to Acting School

05/23/08
Holy Botox, Batman!

It is difficult to describe how UNDER-whelmed I was by last night's viewing of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Don't worry; I won't give out any spoilers. I was actually pleasantly surprised with the supernatural/magical theme of this one (not too far from lightning shooting out of a golden box or people pulling still-beating hearts from chests).

No no.

The crappiness of this film is related mostly to the overacting of Harrison Ford and Karen Allen. They reminded me of actors in a high school play desparately trying to make sure that people at the back of the theater could see that Karen was happy or Indiana was sad. Relative newcomer, Shia LaBeouf, of the immortal movie Holes, was BY FAR the best actor on the screen last night. I might also add that the escape scenes bordered on the absurd (they give James Bond's escape in Goldfinger a run for its money).

I know most people will still go see it and they should. It is an OK movie. I would just recommend not changing any plans to go and see it.

05/02/08
He has a deadly weapon! Get HIM!

Because of his mental problems, Peter Ballance records all of his conversations so that he can remember things. He even has a pin on his chest informing you that he is recording the conversation. Well, the Greenacres Police Department has a problem with any record of their conversations so they decided it would be good to tackle him and charge him with resisting arrest. Now that he's acquitted, he suing the City of Greenacres. Sam Drucker had no comment.

The definition of Good Sportsmanship

05/01/08
It will bring a tear to your eye

In what could have been the final game of her senior year, Sara Tucholsky of Western Oregon hit the first home run of her career. Unfortunately as she was tagging first, she tripped up and tore her ACL. She was unable to move on her own. Knowing that if her teammates touched her, she would be called out, opponent firstbaseman, Mallory Holtman, and shortstop Liz Wallace, proceeded to pick her up and carry her around the bases.

Turns out it was her last game.
