The problem with trailers today

You know, trailers today are almost universally superior to trailers from like 30 years ago. Because a good trailer can make or break a movie's opening weekend, they are VERY well produced. The problem with a growing number of them, though, is that they give too much away. Did you ever walk out of a movie having heard like 70% of the jokes BEFORE you stepped foot into the theater? Let's do an experiment. Below are the trailer and teaser for Hancock. Take a look. (there are movies to watch so click on the link)

So let's write down what we know about the movie:

- Hancock is a drunk superhero.
- He tries to pinch a girl's butt.
- He tempers his popularity with unpopularity.
- A lady accuses him of being drunk and he responds that's because he's been drinking.
- He knocks highway signs onto cop cars before humorously catching the bad guys and dropping their car on top of a skyscraper.
- He throws a kid up really high in the air to scare him.
- He gets an agent to work on his image.
- He saves his agent's life by throwing his car out of the way of a speeding train and stops the train in its tracks, causing it to derail a bunch of cars.
- He throws a whale onto a sailboat.
- His agent talks him into letting the police throw him in jail.
- In jail he shoves a guy's head up another guy's ass.
- Some sort of crime wave hits the city and he gets released from jail.
- He gets a new costume and feels awkward in it.
- He fights some normal bad guys and kicks their asses.
- He makes a speech to the city saying that he has changed his ways (mostly).
- He fights some other superhero type villain who actually gives him a challenge.

Besides this little rant, I am really looking forward to this movie. If they has only released the short trailer, I think people would still flock to see Will Smith on 4th of July weekend. Hopefully there will be a lot more plot to this movie. But I think we've just seen most of the jokes and action.
